Training or Learning?

Many training classes are designed to reduce variation—to ensure that people approach a task the same way. These classes reduce variety another way.

They’re designed for people in a particular functional role or specialty. Think programming language classes, management workshops, or product owner classes. All assume that participants have similar roles, responsibilities and professional concerns.

Problem Solving Leadership (PSL) is different.

PSL increases the variety of responses people have available when faced with issues. Part of how we do that is by increasing the variety among participants.

In our May 2024 workshop we had developers, testers, coaches, and managers. They came from five countries (with eight mother tongues). This is by design. PSL offers an opportunity to connect and learn across cultures, organizational boundaries and points of view.

As one participant said, “I can honestly say I learned at least as much from other participants … Every single person contributed unique insights.

And that is the real secret of PSL: we get great people to show up. Maybe one of them will be you.
